The event was funded through a $2,200 grant from the Healthy Start Foundation that had to be used within three weeks, Garcia said.
Informational handouts were also provided in Spanish from the cooperative extension service, Albemarle Hopeline, the Pasquotank County Department of Social Services and the Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center.
Edgar Irizarry, a program coordinator with the health center, said he had several participants interested in the blood sugar, blood pressure and HIV screenings.
“It seems like the free testing is something that’s very rare for this target population,” Irizarry said.
